Staying Safe On The Trails While we work together to slow the spread of coronavirus by social distancing, going outside is not off limits. In fact going outside while maintaining the safe social distance of 6 feet between people is encouraged. However, the use of trails and public parks is up considerably. So how do you continue to enjoy the outdoors and maintain social distancing? Here are some tips: - If your state, county, or park has a website or phone number to call, use it to educate yourself on the policies in relation to COVID-19 that may be in force at the location you plan on going to. Many parks are utilizing social media to disseminate this type of information as well.
- Keep in mind most public parks are shutting down public bathrooms, water fountains, and play areas, so plan accordingly.
- As best you can remove yourself from the parking lot or trail head area as quickly as possible. These are high traffic areas, so avoid lingering. If the car next to you has its doors open, wait until their doors are closed and they are either away from their vehicle or safely inside, before exiting your car.
- Avoid dog parks, playgrounds, gazebos, common areas, picnic benches or other areas where groups tend to form.
- Do your best to avoid gathering in groups on the trail & maintain the 6 feet possible between you and others at all times. If it’s overcrowded, leave.
- Keep soap and water, hand sanitizer, or disinfecting wipes with you. Wash your hands or sanitize frequently.
- Do not touch your face. Avoid touching railings, trail markers, benches, and trash cans. If you have to use one, be sure to sanitize immediately afterwards.
- If you don’t feel well, stay home.
